The annual Met Gala, a herald of the arrival of a new costume exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is a significant fashion event for the social, cultural, political, and artistic elite in attendance. Last night, numerous esteemed guests congregated to celebrate “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” the latest exhibition from the Met’s Costume Institute, opening to the public on Friday, May 10.
This year's theme, "The Garden of Time," draws inspiration from a 1962 short story by J.G. Ballard and perfectly complements the springtime essence of the Met’s costume exhibition, showcasing rarely seen garments and objects from the museum’s archives.
Fashion choices featured abundant floral details, avian motifs adorning gowns and lapels, and butterfly inspirations, alongside prominent displays of designs by Loewe, one of the event’s sponsors.
Against this backdrop of lush and intricately detailed fashion, creative jewelry moments adorned the red carpet, reminiscent of an enchanted forest brimming with fairy-dusted flowers, amidst an off-white backdrop with airbrushed green edges, echoing the gala's theme.
Tiffany & Co. x Jennifer Lopez
Draped in a dazzling, crystal-encrusted Schiaparelli sheath, the versatile style icon and one of the evening's cohosts adorned herself with an assortment of Tiffany & Co. jewels from the 2024 Blue Book. Bedecked in over 100 carats of diamonds, her standout piece was the Tiffany Celéste necklace, featuring a diamond centerpiece weighing over 20 carats, perfectly complementing her butterfly-inspired ensemble. She accessorized further with Tiffany Celéste earrings, a bracelet, and a ring, all crafted in platinum and 18k gold. Adding an unexpected burst of color was a Jean Schlumberger by Tiffany Bird on a Rock ring, showcasing a fancy intense yellow diamond accented by white diamonds and pink sapphires.
Boucheron x Ayo Edebiri
Known for her performance in "The Bear," the actress, comedian, and television writer graced the event in a Loewe gown adorned with hand-painted floral lace and appliqués, with delicate blooms adorning her hair. To harmonize with the watercolor tones of her attire, Edebiri opted for Boucheron High Jewelry. She accessorized with the Bleu Infini pendant earrings, featuring pear-shaped aquamarines, and a ring showcasing a pavé diamond hummingbird perched on a large oval-shaped aquamarine.
Fred Leighton x Uma Thurman
The actress donned a bespoke periwinkle silk gown by Tory Burch, drawing inspiration from the American Xerces Blue, an extinct butterfly. Adorning her neckline and shoulders was a fluffy cloud of pink and purple butterfly elements, adding whimsy to her ensemble. Fred Leighton provided the impeccable jewelry, with highlights including an Art Deco aquamarine and diamond ring, complemented by drop earrings. She further accentuated her look with a 1950s diamond bracelet by Van Cleef & Arpels, completing her elegant and harmonious ensemble.
