The growth rate marks a decrease from the previous year, 2022, which saw a surge of 3.9 percent. However, when compared to colourless diamonds, which depreciated by 16.5 percent in value during the same period, the performance of fancy colour diamonds appears comparatively favourable.

Despite this overall positive trend, the fourth quarter of 2023 showed signs of a slowdown. The Index Fancy Color Diamond Index monitors pricing trends for fancy colour diamonds across various global markets, including Hong Kong, New York, Geneva, and Tel Aviv, which only saw a marginal increase of 0.1 percent. Specifically, yellow diamonds remained unchanged; pink diamonds saw a slight uptick of 0.1 percent, while blue diamonds experienced a slight decline of 0.2 percent.

Ephraim Zion, a data supplier for FCRF, noted that consumers are exhibiting a tendency to spend less and opt for smaller carat weights. However, this shift is being offset by heightened demand for diamonds with richer colour saturation, such as intense and vivid hues. Zion further predicted that as the global economic situation improves, demand for larger carat weights will likely rebound.

Throughout 2023, fancy yellow diamonds played a significant role in driving the overall increase, similar to their influence in 2022. Yellow diamond prices, on the whole, rose by 4.0 percent, with the vivid category demonstrating the most robust performance, registering an increase of 5.3 percent.

Meanwhile, pink diamonds experienced a moderate rise of 1.8 percent over the year, whereas blue diamonds saw a minimal increase of just 0.1 percent, albeit with a decline in prices observed in the final quarter of the year.
