FCDQ Q3: Robust Pricing of Fancy Color Diamonds, Decrease in White Diamond Values

In the third quarter of 2023, there was a 0.4% increase in the average price of fancy colour diamonds, resulting in a 3.1% rise over the past year.

Across all colour categories, the Vivid grade saw the highest overall increase at 1%. Consequently, the Fancy and Intense grades contributed to a modest growth, leading to an overall uptick of 0.2%. Noteworthy details from the third quarter of 2023 include a 0.5% appreciation in the Yellow category, a 0.4% increase in Pinks, and a 0.1% decrease in Blues.


A 0.5% increase primarily drove the annual increment in the Yellow category. The Vivid grade experienced a substantial 1.4% increase across all sizes, while the Fancy and Intense grades displayed an average decrease of 0.55%. Notably, the Vivid 3-carat category witnessed an impressive surge of 4.2%, and the 5-carat fancy grade followed suit with a 1.1% increase. Additionally, the Intense grade showed a slight uptick in the 1-carat segment with a 0.3% increase.


Pink diamonds exhibited an overall growth of 0.4%, spearheaded by a 1% increase in the Vivid category. The Fancy grade contributed to this rise with a 0.6% increase, while the Intense category remained stable, displaying soft results in larger weights. The most significant increase was observed in the 1ct Intense pink category, rising by 4.4%, while the 10ct Intense pink category saw a 1.4% decrease.


In the third quarter of 2023, blue diamond prices experienced a minor decline, mainly in the Fancy grade category, decreasing by 0.5%. In contrast, the Vivid and Intense grades remained unchanged. The 10-carat intense blue segment demonstrated a 1.1% increase, while the Fancy 3-carat category showed a decrease of -1.1%.
